シャルル・エドシックは、類いまれなカリスマ性をもった創業者シャルル＝カミーユ・エドシックによっ
て1851年に創立されました。当時弱冠29歳であったにも関わらず、理想を実現するべく、自身の個性を反
映し、自らの名を冠したシャンパーニュブランドを始めます。冒険家、起業家、粋なジェントルマンとし
て同世代人に知られ、多くの偉大な著名人を魅了してきた彼は、後に「シャンパン・チャーリー」と呼ば
れるようになり、映画や歌のモデルにもなりました。
シャルル・エドシックでは、ローマ時代の2世紀にまで遡るクレイエール（採石場跡）を熟成倉庫として
利用しています。
創業当時は見向きもされなかったクレイエールでしたが、迷路のように入り組んだ地下道と地下室の湿
度がシャンパーニュの熟成に最適であると、創業者のシャルル=カミーユは見抜いていました。気温10度
に保たれたこのクレイエールで、最低でも3年もの間、シャルル・エドシックのシャンパーニュは熟成さ
れるのです。
創業者シャルル＝カミーユが生きていた頃から「シャルルのワインは、いつも飲めばすぐにそれとわか
る」と評されていましたが、特徴づけたのはその贅沢な品質。アサンブラージュの60%はその年のワイン
ですが、残る40%はリザーヴワインを使用しており、これにより複雑で深い味わいを生み出しています。
しかも、リザーヴワインは60クリュから厳選されたブドウを使用し、平均で10年の熟成を経たものという
こだわりよう。
さらに、ダニエル・ティボー、レジス・カミュ、ティエリー・ロゼ、そしてシリル・ブランといった歴代
の卓越した醸造責任者に恵まれ、伝統を守るだけではなく、新たなスタイルを造りだすメゾンとして今も
なお挑戦を続けています。ダンディーとして鳴らした創業者の生きざまを感じさせる、贅沢なシャンパー
ニュなのです。
高品質で贅沢なシャルル・エドシックのシャンパーニュは、1859年のボルドー万国博覧会で金賞を受賞。
以降は瞬く間に、ロシア、スウェーデン、オランダ、ポルトガル、バイエルン、プロイセン、ザクセン・
ワイマール、スペイン、ルクセンブルク、オーストリア、エチオピアなど世界の王室や宮廷で愛飲される
ようになりました。
英王室との関わりは深く、1897年にエドワード7世御用達となり、1977年にはエリザベス2世在位25周年限
定ワインを製造。1981年のチャールズ皇太子とダイアナ妃の結婚の際には「ロイヤル・ウエディング・キュ
ヴェ」を発表しました。また、政治家のアイゼンハワーやチャーチル、ジャズ歌手・女優のジョセフィン
・ベーカー、画家のダリ、探検家のロバート・ファルコン・スコットなど錚々たる著名人が、大切な人を

Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of
Charles Heidsieck's NV Brut Reserve was disgorged earlier this year. It's showing very well,
opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and
walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural
attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions,
displaying good concentration and underlying richness. This is a bottling that continues to
punch above its weight and which both merits and rewards a few years in the cellar before
opening. |

The new release of Heidsick's NV Rose Reserve is based on the 2012 vintage, with the usual
20% of reserve wines and some 6% still red wine from Les Riceys in the Aube. Already
exhibiting considerable complexity, it wafts from the glass with scents of orange rind, red
plums, gingerbread and red berries. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny
textured and fleshy, with lively acids and an attractively vinous profile. It was disgorged a
few months ago with 11 grams per liter dosage. |

Disgorged in 2019 with eight grams per liter dosage, the 2012 Brut
Millesime offers up aromas of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers and
clear honey, complemented by hints of toasted bread, citrus zest and
linden. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and nicely concentrated,
with lively acids and a pinpoint mousse, it's more generous and
demonstrative than the 2008, but it will nonetheless reward a bit of
bottle age. |

The 2008 Brut Millesime from Charles Hedsieck continues to perform
superbly, opening in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of
pear, yellow apple, citrus oil, honeycomb, dried white flowers and warm
biscuits. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive,
with a racy spine of acidity, a pinpoint mousse, excellent concentration
and a long, elegantly chalky finish. This 2008 is still several years
from showing all its cards, but it is a brilliant Champagne in the
making. |

Disgorged in November 2017 after 13 years on the lees, the stunning 2004 Blanc des
Millenaires is a worthy successor to the 1995. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of green
apple, pear, brioche and fresh pastry that are framed by a lovely smoky, autolytic top note,
the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with ripe acids, superb depth at the core and
a textural, vinous quality while remaining very classical in profile. The finish is long and
expansive. A blend of Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Vertus, it saw
nine grams per liter dosage. This is a terrific blanc de blancs from Charles Heidsieck that
has a long and glorious future ahead of it. Sadly, the price of this cuvee has finally caught
up with the quality. |
