　ジョン・シェーファーが出版業界での２３年のキャリアを辞め、シカゴから家族と共にナパヴァレーに移った１９７２年に始まります。ナパヴァレーのスタッグス・リープ・ディストリクトの２１０エーカーの土地を購入した後に、急斜面で岩の多い山腹に１９２０年代の古い既存のブドウ園を移植して、現在の５０エーカーのブドウ園面積にする困難極まる仕事に直面していました。
７８年に最初のカベルネを栽培。最初のカベルネはベンチマークとなり、１９８８年にドイツで開催された国際的なブラインド・テイスティングでは、ボルドーのグラン・クリュ、シャトーマルゴー、シャトーラトゥール、シャトー・パルメなどを押さえ、なんと１位を獲得したのです。
現社長の長男ダグ・シェーファーは、カリフォルニア大学デイヴィス校で醸造学とブドウ裁培を学び卒業後、１９８３年にワインメーカーになりました。翌年、エリアス・フェルナンデス（スペイン系アメリカ人）がアシスタント・ワイン・メーカーとして加わりました。
ダグとエリアスは、品質、一貫性、および優雅なシェーファー・スタイルを醸造するために一緒に密接に働きました。新しいブドウ園は時間をかけて、オーク・ノール、スタッグス・リープ、およびカーネロス地区で全ブドウ園面積をさらに２００エーカー以上増やしました。９４年に、エリアスはワイン・メーカーに任命され、ジョンが会長になり、ダグは社長に就任。１９７８年の僅か１，０００ケースのスタートから着実に拡大され、総計３万２０００ケースのカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン、メルロー、シャルドネ、サンジョベーゼ、シラーなどのワインを生産するまでに発展し、現在に至っています。

Shafer’s earliest harvested Chardonnay on record, the 2004 exhibits abundant fruit, honeysuckle, apricot, and citrus oil characteristics in its classic, full-bodied personality. With good acidity as well as abundant oak, this beauty should be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years.

There are 2,500 cases of this remarkable cuvee. The inky/purple-hued 2002 Relentless possesses a fabulously exuberant, extroverted nose of black fruits, creosote, flowers, and pepper along with huge, sweet blueberry, chocolaty, espresso notes. Flamboyant, rich, full-bodied, and intense, but not overweight, it will drink well for 10-12 years

2003 Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Shafer Vineyards A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table wine from Stag's Leap District, Napa, North Coast, California, USA Review by Robert Parker Wine Advocate #168 (Dec 2006) Rating: 95 points Drink 2006-2031 One of the world’s most extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons is the 1,800-2,400-case offering of Shafer’s Hillside Select. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is almost as good as the 2002. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, black currants, licorice, crushed rocks, and white flowers. While full-bodied, powerful, and enormously endowed, it is not as seamless as the 2002. Impeccable balance, purity, and length suggest it will drink well for 20-25 years.
